Magnifying Devices

A collection of three unusual wood and glass magnifying devices. American, Circa 1780-1820.

By filling with water, these devices were used aboard ship for magnification in reading charts. In over 25 years of buying and selling antiques, these are the only ones I've ever encountered. Condition wise, they are pretty good considering their age - around 200 years old. One has a cracked glass and there is some wood flaking. Suffice it to say the condition is fair with some imperfections. Could be refinished and stained to look more presentable, but it would be a shame to trade their charm for the sake of appearance. Tallest one is about 15 in.
