Transforming Ancient Ivories into Modern Works of Art

Scrimshander Terry Christian's interest in scrimshaw and nautical subjects might well be an inherited condition. Descended from the infamous Fletcher Christian, the leader of the Bounty Mutiny, Christian's art is practiced with simple hand tools not unlike those employed by 19th century scrimshanders who engraved whale's teeth to cope with the boredom of long ocean voyages.

Christian, one of the world's leading scrimshaw artists, is the recipient of numerous competitive awards and honors. His "Peaceful Harbor" masterpiece, exhibited in our gallery (see above), won Best of Show at the prestigious Mystic International competition.
