The Ann and Hope off Lin Tin Island

The Ann and Hope in convoy, February 8, 1799

Piracy was so rampant in the South China Sea that lone merchant ships stood little chance of returning home with their cargoes unless guarded by British Indiamen or ships of the line.

Here the Ann & Hope from Providence, Rhode Island, forms up in convoy with H.M.S. Arrogant (74 guns, far left) and H.M.S. Intrepid (64 guns, second from left), shown weighing anchor.

The Ann & Hope chain of dry goods stores that were originally supplied by this ship still exist in New England and still bear her name.
