The Challenge Leaving Hong Kong

Leaving Hong Kong Harbor, October, 1861

Marryat code flags on the mizzenmast spell out "Challenge" on the 10-year-old clipper, still the tallest ship of its day. To the right is a Royal Navy ship of the line, Princess Charlotte, built in Portsmouth in 1825.

She saw action at the bombardment of St. Jean D'Arc in the Mediterranean in l840. After service in the East Indies, she was sent to Hong Kong and used as a hospital ship. By 1861 she was listed as a receiving ship, a floating hotel for naval personnel.

To the left of the Princess is the Flying Cloud, off its stern is the famous China Trade Company, Jardine and Matheson, fictionalized by James Clavell as the Noble House.
