The
Columbia Rediviva Passing Diamond Head

Diamond Head, O'ahu, September, 1789
The Columbia arrived at Canton, successfully
traded for tea, and returned to Boston in August of 1790 to
become the first U.S. ship to sail around the world.
While in Canton, the captain wrote
a letter to the owners assuring them of their safe passage
and mentioning that "While in Honolulu we purchased 5
casks of salted pork and 150 live hogs and proceeded on our
7-week sail to Canton."
The romantic sunset and escort by
Hawaiian outriggers off O'ahu must have been a relief to tired
seamen after the rigors of a passage around Cape Horn and
a run before prevailing south-easterlies to the Sandwich Islands.
