The
Columbia Rediviva Leaving Hancock's Wharf

Hancock's Wharf, Boston, September
30, 1787
The first American vessel to circumnavigate
the globe, Columbia Rediviva, sailed from Boston's Hancock
Wharf on September 30, 1787, bound for Canton for tea.
It was a voyage filled with adventure,
including a desertion in the Cape Verdes, fatal cases of scurvy
climaxing in Nootka sound, trading with the Hawaiians, fighting
pirates in Sunda Straits - all celebrated in Massey paintings
and sketches.
Here Massey recreates Boston in 1787.
Part of Long Wharf can be seen in the background and astern
of Columbia is Fanuiel Hall. Then almost on the waterfront,
today after numerous harbor projects, it is quite a distance
from the water.
23 x 30 in. lithograph - 275 edition (remarques
