The Empress of China in the Straits of Sunda

The gateway to the Orient, July 30, 1784

After a stormy passage around the Cape of Good Hope, the Empress of China carried the American flag into the Indian Ocean - virgin territory for the new country.

Here Massey chronicles her passage into dangerous waters: rampant with piracy, low lying coral reefs, and uncharted shoals. Behind her, the Indian Ocean; to the north, Sumatra; to the south, Java.

In full sail on July 30, 1784, the Empress of China makes quick passage through the Sunda Straits. She will work her way east through the Java Sea, then turn north past Borneo and Malaysia, and eventually enter the South China Sea.
