The
Flying Cloud Entering Hong Kong

Victoria Harbor, Hong Kong, December
5, 1851
One of Donald McKay's most famous
clippers, Flying Cloud, was built in Boston and sailed from
New York on her maiden voyage June 2, 1851. In only 81 days
and 21 hours, she arrived in San Francisco.
She departed San Francisco on October
20, passed Honolulu November 6, and arrived in Hong Kong 45
days later on December 5, 1851. The record-breaker was her
fourth voyage, in 1854, from San Francisco to Hong Kong in
37 days.
Here the Marryat code flags on the
mizzenmast spell out her name to announce her arrival in Victoria
Harbor, Hong Kong.
