The
Alliance Bound for Macau

Philadelphia, June 13, 1787
Robert Morris, half-owner of the Empress
of China, purchased the Alliance for $26,000 in Philadelphia
in May, 1785. A 36-gun U.S.
Navy Frigate, many members of the U.S. Congress wished to
keep her, as she was the last remaining ship in the postwar
U.S. Navy.
Morris outfitted her for China trade,
and she departed Philadelphia on June 13, 1787, from the foot
of Chestnut Street. Above the
roofs on the left can be seen the dome of Market House and,
to its right, the spire of Christ Church which still stands
in modern Philadelphia.
Alliance reached Macau on December
23, and returned to Philadelphia on September 17, 1788.
