HMS
Resolution and Discovery at Macau, December 3, 1779
In preparation for the long journey back
to England, repairs were made and supplies procured at the
Typa anchorage, south of Macau. It had not been an easy voyage
since Captain Cook's death in Hawaii on February 14, 1779.
It was in Macau that the expedition learned, that in their
absence, the American colonies were in full rebellion and
France, England's traditional enemy, had joined the fray.
Before leaving, it was learned that the expedition would receive
"safe passage" from the French and the Americans
due to the scientific nature of the voyage.
The expedition sailed for England on the
28th. of January, 1780 arriving at the Thames and London 249
days later on the 7th. of October. The voyage had lasted four
years, three months and epitomized the spirit of "The
Age of Exploration."
