Resolution
and Discovery Entering Snug Cove

Captain
Cook seeking shelter along the Canadian Pacific Coast,
April 1, 1778
After Captain James Cook's Discovery of
the Hawaiian Islands, he sailed north for the American coast
to continue his search for the elusive Northwest Passage.
Cook arrived at what is today known as Vancouver Island where,
looking for safe harbor in the inclement weather, he pulled
into Nootka Sound.
The two British ships were met by skin-clad
Indians in large dugout canoes. Little did Cook suspect that
the sea otter pelts his men were trading for would be the
means by which the Northwest Coast and the Hawaiian Islands
would be brought into the western world.
