The Cook expedition departed Tahiti
on December 7, 1777, en route to the unexplored Pacific
Northwest to begin the search for a passage through to
the Atlantic Ocean.
Seventeen days into the journey, Christmas
Island was discovered. Captain Cook continued on a northerly
course and after crossing the equator, he observed increasing
numbers of birds and sea turtles - suggesting land was
near.
In this view, the expedition is seen
in the central Pacific Ocean heading north toward the
most unexpected discovery that Cook would ever make -
the Hawaiian Islands.
