HMS Discovery
One of the most famous ships of the great
age of Pacific exploration, the "Discovery" was
actually a very typical small merchant vessel. She was converted
for use in the exploration of the Pacific Ocean and she accompanied
her even more famous sister the "Resolution" on
Captain James Cook's third and final voyage.
When the "Discovery" arrived at
Kealakekua Bay on the Island of Hawaii in 1779, nearly four
hundred Hawaiians crowded her decks and clambered up her rigging.
The result was nearly catastrophic as the ship came close
to capsizing under the weight of so much humanity.
