The Flying
Fish
Under Kauai's deep blue skies, the Schooner
"Flying Fish" enters Hulaia Harbor [present day
Nawiliwili] in 1840. The "Flying Fish" was one of
seven vessels in the United States Exploring Expedition headed
by Captain Charles Wilkes. The expressed purpose of the expedition
was for the advancement of science, but its major contribution
involved the making of accurate charts.
Wilkes dispatched the "Flying Fish",
commanded by Samuel Knox, to chart several of Kauai's harbors,
including Nawiliwili, and to shuttle a team of scientists.
The "Flying Fish," an ex-New York harbor pilot schooner,
was given a shorter rig in order to handle the rough seas
and high winds of ocean navigation.
