Nightboat to Canton

The
Steamboat Kinshan, 1864
Moonlight bathes Hong Kong's wharf as the
steamer Kinshan departs for Canton. Built by Roosevelt and
Joice in New York and shipped to China aboard the W.B. Palmer
in 1863; she was assembled in Whampoa where she went into
service between Hong Kong and Canton. In the background is
the steamboat Fire Dart, built in America in 1859 and sailed
to China in November, 1860.
With the advent of the steam engines, the
heyday of the glorious China clippers soon came to an end.
