Prince of
Wales
Built on the River Thames in 1752, the "Prince
of Wales" made one voyage to the Pacific under charter
to the King George's Sound Company.
On January 9, 1787, she became the first
western ship to sail the North coast of Molokai, which has
the tallest sea cliffs in the world. She was only a small
ship of 171 tons, 14 guns and a company of 35 officers and
crew.
Off the bow, in this profile view, a ship's
boat is bringing Captain Colnett aboard after a trip ashore.
In the bow is a sailor with a boat hook ready to hook on.
Off the stern is a Hawaiian canoe with one
man aboard and a second swimming below to examine the rudder.
