Buffalo
Harbour

Buffalo, New York, 1870
Buffalo's main business by 1870 was the
milling of grain. In this view, the lofty grain elevators
can be seen close to the harbor where steamships transported
the product to domestic and foreign ports.
For years Buffalo had struggled with its
Niagara River neighbor Black Rock for trading surpremacy on
the Great Lakes. Buffalo's location, a large work force and
plenty of business capital had clearly given the Queen City
the inside track at this moment in history.
