The
S.Y. Endurance

Shackleton's valiant voyage, 1914-16
In 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton mounted an
expedition to cross the Antarctic continent form sea to sea.
His ship the Endurance, was caught and crushed by the ice
pack of the Wedell Sea and sank after being abandoned on October
27, 1915.
With the world concentrating its attention
on the outbreak of World War I, it was not aware that the
Endurance had sunk on November 21, 1915. It was also not aware
of the fact that the party of 28 men were camped on the frozen
sea drifting north for five months until the ice began to
break up.
From that point it took another month to
finally get back to civilization. The story of the Endurance's
demise and the hard fought survival of its crew is one of
the most inspiring episodes in seafaring history.
