The
Battle of Lake Erie

The first U.S. fleet victory, September
10, 1813
Several hours after Commodore Oliver H.
Perry engaged the British Navy in battle, his flagship Lawrence
was reduced to a wreck. Undaunted, the young American commander
carried his famous battle flag, "Don't Give Up the Ship,"
and transferred to the undamaged brig, the Niagara.
As depicted in this view, the wind had freshened
and the Niagara charged through the British line performing
the classic naval maneuver of "crossing the T."
The Niagara's unrelenting cannon fire weakened the enemy ships
to such an extent that within fifteen minutes of its first
broadside, the Royal Navy signaled her first surrender of
an entire fleet.
The Battle of Lake Erie was the first U.S.
fleet victory and it decisively reaffirmed independence from
Britain as well as U.S. control of the West.
