Race
Day at Buffalo Yacht Club

The West Wind and Merle mixing it
up before the start, 1890's
This view shows the spanking new Buffalo
Yacht Club House built in 1893 decked out for Race Day. At
the club dock is one of the large power yachts of the day,
likely Captain Daniel Goode's "Elmasada" and behind
it the public pier that extended out into the Black Rock Channel
from the foot of Porter Avenue.
At left and in the foreground is the Forty-one
foot schooner, "West Wind." To the right and slightly
behind her is the Forty foot cutter, "Merle." Three
Toronto skiffs are racing around the short course much as
Sunfish races would be held today.
The print has been published on canvas to
closely resemble the original oil painting.
