Discovery and
Chatham off Hanalei Bay

Captain
Vancouver charting Hawaiian waters, Kaua'i, March 8, 1794
Captain George Vancouver had helped Cook
chart Kaua'i's south and east shoreline. He returned to the
Pacific in March, 1792, charged with charting the Pacific
Northwest and the rest of Hawai'i.
In March, 1794, after wintering at Kealekekua
Bay, he sailed up Kaua'i's northern coast and discovered a
most spectacular vista. In the ship's log, he writes:
"The coast of Attowai, [Kaua'i] assumes
a rugged and romantic appearance, rising suddenly to lofty
abrupt cliffs, that jut out into a variety of steep rocky
points."
