Discovery and
Chatham off Na Pali Coast

Captain
Vancouver and humpback with Kalalau Valley astern,
March 8, 1794
Discovery and Chatham run before a northeast
wind down Kaua'i's Na Pali Coast with the wild spires and
chasms of Kalalau Valley astern and a breeching humpback whale
along side.
Whales were apparently such a common sight
that few early explorers noted them. Cook mentions them once,
when one breached so close to the ship that it soaked him.
Although Vancouver makes no mention of whales
down the Na Pali coast, they are common there this time of
year.
