Honolulu Harbor

A busy
port and gateway to the South Pacific, January 24, 1853
Bustling even by moonlight, Honolulu
is shown as a busy port by the 1850's. Here, Donald McKay's
famous clipper ship "Sovereign of the Seas" is shown
at Robinson's Wharf - far right - being reprovisioned during
a voyage to China for the tea trade.
While she was in harbor, even the
King of Hawai'i visited this remarkable vessel. In the middle
ground, a whaler is tied up at the Market House Wharf.
Smaller interisland packets, such
as the "Pa'u" in the foreground, are being heavily
laden with chickens, pigs, horses and human passengers bound
for the outer islands.
