Resolution
and Discovery off Kawai Point

Captain
Cook's moment of discovery, Kaua'i, January 19, 1778
At dawn on January 19, 1778, sailing
north in the central Pacific Ocean, Captain James Cook's ships
sighted an island to the northeast (O'ahu) and another to
the west of it (Kaua'i). Landfall was near what is today Nawiliwili.
Maritime artist and historian Raymond
A. Massey celebrates the discovery not just of new lands but
of new people, as Hawaiians extend the first aloha to representatives
of European civilization.
After this brief meeting, unable to
find safe anchorage, the two ships sailed southwest along
the coast and finally dropped anchor at Waimea.
