The
Pride of Hawai'i Entering Hanalei Bay

King Kamehameha's pleasure yacht with
a special guest,
summer of 1821
King Kamehameha II's pleasure yacht,
"Pride of Hawai'i" (launched in 1816 as "Cleopatra's
Barge") sails into Hanalei Bay in the summer of 1821.
For two weeks, Kamehameha toured
the island in grand style with Kaua'i's King Kaumuali'i.
On the evening of the ship's departure,
Kamehameha ordered his crew to quietly set sail for O'ahu
with Kaumuali'i still on board, in a drunken stupor from the
feasting. While the king snoozed, his kingdom was lost.
Never to return to his beloved Garden
Island, Kaumuali'i lived out his remaining years on O'ahu
as husband of Queen Ka'ahumanu and a virtual
prisoner.
