Resolution and Discovery off Po'ipu

An escort of outrigger canoes passing Shipwreck Cove, Kaua'i,
January 19, 1778

On his third voyage to the Pacific, Captain James Cook searched unsuccessfully for a Northwest Passage. After wintering in Tahiti, he sailed north to discover the Sandwich Islands - later to be called Hawai'i.

After making landfall at Kawai Point, Cook's Resolution and Discovery reached down the south coast of Kaua'i, along what is now known as Po'ipu, to finally anchor at Waimea.

Here they are seen with an escort of outrigger canoes and curious Hawaiians, passing Shipwreck Cove.
