Discovery and
Chatham off Maui

Vancouver
guided by torches, March 12, 1793
Captain George Vancouver is in command of
the HMS Discovery, accompanied by the HMS Chatham as the expedition
sails northward along Maui's Lahaina coast.
Vancouver was guided through the tricky
passage by a Maui Chieftain, who positioned Hawaiians along
the shoreline with lighted torches to keep the ships from
running aground. In the distance, the island of Lana'i is
bathed in spectacular sunset typical for this time of year.
Vancouver visited the islands on two separate
voyages and finished much of the navigational chart work that
Captain James Cook had started 15 years earlier. Vancouver
was well liked by the Hawaiians and presented the chiefs with
gifts of livestock, including sheep, goats, cattle and horses.
