Na Pali, First
Passage

King
George and Queen Charlotte off Na Pali, February 19, 1787
In this view of the Honapu Valley, the British
ships, King George and Queen Charlotte explore the north shore
of Kauai. Before the British ships made this historic voyage
only the Hawaiians had navigated this magnificent coastline.
We can but imagine the reaction of the ship's
company as the mysterious lofty chasms passed before them.
Although Captain Nathanial Portlock of the King George was
more concerned about practical matters when he wrote in the
ship's log on February 19, 1787:
"Steering East by South, along the
North side of Atooi (Kauai). I was in hopes that as we drew
near the North side of the island we should have canoes approach
with hogs and vegetables. We had pretty well drained the South
side."
The expedition had departed England two
years earlier with orders to "Prosecute and convert to
national utility the discoveries of the late Captain Cook."
