Gone Missing

The
last sighting of the La Perouse expedition - 1788
L'Astrolabe and La Boussole under the command
of Jean Francois La Perouse vanished somewhere off the coast
of Australia in early 1788. In his journal, artist Raymond
Massey writes:
"The famous French exploring expedition
disappeared from history as if they sailed into a fog and
never came out. For almost forty years, the world pondered
the mystery of France's lost expedition without the faintest
glimmer of its fate."
Artifacts of the shipwrecked vessels were
finally recovered on remote Vanikoro Island, Salomon Islands,
on June 7, 1827, where the expedition was torn to bits by
a violent hurricane and driven upon the reef.
