Gustavius III

The Bombardment of Waikiki
In this little known yet notorious event,
a Swedish ship, Gustavius III, formerly "The Mercury"
is firing cannon volleys at the village of Waikiki.
The assault, which occurred in the late
summer of 1791, was prompted by the theft of the ship's anchor
and the Hawaiians' subsequent refusal to give it back.
The fiery reprisal, however, failed to convince
the native population to comply and the "Gustavius"
sailed the following day for Kaua'i without the services of
one very large iron anchor.
