Prins of Wales off Moloka'i

Discovering the tallest sea cliffs in the world, January 9, 1788

On January 9, 1788, the Prince of Wales was the first ship to sail the north coast of Moloka'i which has the tallest sea cliffs in the world. She was only a small ship of 171 tons, 14 guns and a company of 35 officers and crew.

She was under charter to the King George's Sound Company to make this one voyage to the far Pacific. Her consort, the Princess Royal of 65 tons, became temporarily separated during the period of the voyage depicted here.

The two vessels reunited some days later in Waimea Bay on the island of Kaua'i.
