Discovering
the tallest sea cliffs in the world, January 9, 1788
On January 9, 1788, the Prince of Wales
was the first ship to sail the north coast of Moloka'i which
has the tallest sea cliffs in the world. She was only a small
ship of 171 tons, 14 guns and a company of 35 officers and
crew.
She was under charter to the King George's
Sound Company to make this one voyage to the far Pacific.
Her consort, the Princess Royal of 65 tons, became temporarily
separated during the period of the voyage depicted here.
The two vessels reunited some days later
in Waimea Bay on the island of Kaua'i.
