The
soft shades, the delicate lines, the serene tranquility; this
is the realm of the visual poetry of Caroline Young. Her elegant
compositions and flawless brushwork bring both collectors
and art critics to sing her praise.
The Japanese themes positioned
Caroline Young at the crown of modern oriental painting. However,
her Chinese roots have a more pronounced presence in her later
works. Through her return to Chinese historical subjects,
Young is paying tribute to her great-grandparents, who sacrificed
the familiar to immigrate to Hawaii in hopes of a better life.
Caroline
Young's graceful watercolors on silk pay homage to her mentor,
Lam Oi Char. He helped her gain confidence enough to succeed
in the complex classical Chinese Delicate Style. The Master
has many reasons to be proud of his student; she is extremely
meticulous and her research is extensive. Most
time away from the easel is spent studying Chinese history,
culture, costumes, and ornamentation.
Young's
means of expression are not limited to watercolors. She also
uses acrylics and gouache, and even mixes her own colors to
reach the uniquely brilliant hues, unavailable commercially,
that have become her trademark.
